There are many wonderful places to
visit during your stay at Birch Cottage, whether you choose to stay
close to home or travel further a field.
To help you plan your trip to
Burra, I have included a few of the sites that are to be found locally
and beyond. For information
on these sites and the area in general, don't forget to have a look at
the following websites:
And just incase you were wondering, here's the
weather to expect whilst you're here (Clare is the closest town). |

When visiting an Australian country
town, it's hard to go past a good old fashioned "pub" meal, but visitors
to Burra have a greater selection of eateries, than simply the local
pub.
For a quick lunch, a homemade Cornish
pasty from
the
Waters
Burra Bakery, Polly's Tea Rooms or
the Cook O'Burra Café
is an absolute must.
After all, Cornish miners working at the local mine, were the "heart" of
Burra for many years.
Interested
in a mid afternoon treat?
Gaslight Collectables and Old Books
produce a wonderful aromatic coffee and also serve traditional
Devonshire tea.
When you're not busy visiting
the sites or enjoying a local meal, why not visit one of the
many shops Burra has to offer? Burra is certain to have a store to interest you -
antiques, books, collectables and even home decor. And of
course, if food supplies are what you
are after, we can help you there too.
Included below are some of the local eating establishments
and shops.

Burra Heritage Passport
Of course, one of the best ways to
see the various Burra sites is to get the
Burra Heritage Passport, which can be obtained from the Burra
Visitors Centre.
The 11 km heritage trail has been
clearly marked out around the town. There are 49 sites along the trail.
5 minutes from
Birch Cottage
18 hole golf course and greens
Known as the Red Bridge, it was built in 1878 and is now a footbridge
and part of a recreation area.
Part of the original company town of
Kooringa, laid out in 1846. Until 1861, the main road from Adelaide
ended here. The Rotunda built in 1911 was used in the film,
"Breaker Morant".
St Mary's Anglican
Church
Market Street, Burra
Built in 1879 and includes stained glass windows made by
Edwards Brooks, South Australia's first stained glass maker.
St
Joseph's Catholic Church
Market Street, Burra
The first Catholic services were held in Burra in 1849, however
this church was built by Jesuits from Sevenhill, in 1874. The
convent and school at the rear were closed in 1970.
Burra Uniting Church (former Kooringa
Wesleyan Church)
Chapel Street, Burra
The first Wesleyan chapel and schoolroom was built on
this site in 1847 and was the first church in Burra. The original
church was later demolished and this one was built in its place in 1914.
Old Redruth Methodist Church
Ludgvan Street, Burra North
Built
in 1874, it is a rare example of Norman style Gothic architecture and is
the only cruciform building left in Burra.
A guide dressed in period costume takes visitors through the
cottage furnished with authentic 1860s artefacts and describes life in Burra during the early copper mining days.
A cottage garden has been
planted with herbs and flowers of the period.
The Museum is a recreation of an old
style general store, post office and family home at the turn of the
century. It was originally the residence and shop of Andrew Wade,
who was a tailor.
The South Australian Mining Company began the construction of the
33 miners' cottages in 1849 to provide alternative housing for the many miners who had
'set up house' in hazardous dugouts along the
banks of the Burra Creek. By 1852 the three wings had been completed
and by 1876,
Paxton Square housed in excess of
160 people.
In 1851, about 1800 miners and their
families lived in these dugouts along the riverbed.
A flood that year drove the
inhabitants from the dugouts and by 1860 the
dugouts were virtually deserted.
Displays works of regional artists and also stages professionally
curated exhibitions from all over Australia.
1878 saw the first beer brewed
in Burra at the Unicorn Brewery, called Unicorn Ale.
By the time the Burra brewery
closed in 1902, it was supplying beer to many northern towns including
Broken Hill, and owned the seven hotels then open in Burra, five of
which are still open today and preserved close to their original
décor.
15 minutes from
Birch Cottage
Copper ore was discovered at Burra
in 1845 and by 1850 Burra was the largest metal mine in Australia,
employing 1,000 men and boys.
The mine closed in 1877 after
producing ore containing about 50,000 tonnes of copper. Between 1971
and 1981 open cutting, producing an additional 24,000 tonnes of
copper.
Copper has left its indelible mark
on the mine. The pool's colour is the result of the copper salts
dissolving into the water.
Morphett's Engine house once housed a
Cornish Beam engine used for pumping when the Burra copper
mine was being worked. The shaft was used for pumping ground water
from the mine.
The Chimney was built to provide an
updraught to the boilers at Peacock's Enginehouse.
The reopening of the
open cut mine in the early 1970s necessitated the destruction of
Peacock's Chimney, so to the credit of the National Trust, the chimney
was rebuilt at its present location in 1972.
The figure at the top of the chimney
is Johnny Green, the mascot of the Burra miners.
-
Powder
Magazine
At Burra Mine
The Powder Magazine was erected in 1847to store gunpowder used in
blasting at the Burra Burra mine.
It is the oldest remaining mine building in Australia
-
Redruth
Gaol
Tregony
Street, Burra North
Erected
in 1856 at a cost of Ł3200, it was the first gaol in South Australia
outside of Adelaide.
The Gaol
was closed in 1894 and the prisoners transferred to Gladstone Gaol.
In
1897, the Gaol was restored and reopened as a Girls Reformatory but
closed in 1922.
The Gaol
is famous for the filming of the 1979 movie "Breaker Morant".
Hampton was an English village,
named after assayer, Edward Hampton and was established in 1857.
It contained 30 miners' cottages
and a Bible Christian chapel. The township was abandoned in
1960.
Mining
operations were abandoned in 1849, but recommenced in 1858. No
orebody was discovered and mining ceased in 1862.
Rail services to
Burra operated between 1870 and 1985. In 1874 it took five hours
for the 160km trip to Adelaide. The line closed in 1998.
Erected in 1847.
The cells were used as a temporary gaol until Redruth Gaol was built in
1856.
